Orbital ATK was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as the prime contractor for the NASA Balloon Operations Contract (NBOC). Under NBOC, Orbital ATK provides program management, mission planning, engineering services, and field operations for NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program Office, which is managed at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) under the Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects Directorate (SSOPD) located at Wallops Flight Facility (WFF). NBOC is executed primarily from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) located in Palestine, Texas.
The CSBF provides services for launching large (400-ft. diameter), unmanned, high-altitude (120,000 ft.), research balloons, tracking and recovering the scientific experiments suspended beneath them for NASA centers and Universities from all over the world. Our team of personnel conducts approximately 15 balloon missions per year from locations in the U.S. and around the world, including New Mexico, Sweden, Antarctica, Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. Orbital ATK’s contract to manage the CSBF began on February 1, 2015.
