Third-Stage Rocket Motor (TSRM)

​​The dual-pulse, third-stage rocket motor provides mission flexibility to the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) interceptor. Short-range targets can be engaged using a single pulse longer range. Higher-velocity targets are engaged using both pulses, increasing both range and impact velocity of the interceptor.

The hybrid attitude control system allows for navigation updates between burns, shroud removal and target acquisition before kill vehicle separation. Advanced engineering allows the TSRM to fit into a very small envelope, enabling launches of the SM-3 missile from the Mk 41 vertical launch system with no modification.

TSRM has been successful, performing above expectations on flight tests, including 16 successful hit-to-kill engagement tests. As a result of these tests, the U.S. and Japanese navies have deployed the SM-3 missile with its TSRM third stage on Aegis-equipped ships.

The dual-pulse capability with thrust vector control provides mission flexibility for the TSRM to handle a wide range of engagements thanks to its two 10-second bums and nearly 200 pounds of propellant. The graphite epoxy motor case (fabricated using Orbital ATK's Hcase on propellant" process) and interstage provide a high-strength, lightweight case capable of meeting the high demands placed on the TSRM.

The motor has an integrated warm-gas/cold-gas attitude control system for powered flight and coast periods. The cold-gas system provides low-level attitude control during coast periods; the warm-gas system provides attitude control for larger navigational corrections.

The TSRM has a shipboard-safe, flight-qualified integrated stage.
