Orbital ATK Launches Next Generation of Short-Range Targets
Zombie Pathfinder Targets To Be Used In Future Interceptor Tests

Dulles, Virginia 20 December 2016 – Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA), a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies, today announced the successful demonstration of the Zombie Pathfinder short-range ballistic missile target, the first of its type launched by Orbital ATK, for the U.S. Army under NASA’s Sounding Rocket Program. Zombie Pathfinder is a guided low-cost target representing a class of threats. The mission, launched from the White Sands Missile Range in White Sands, New Mexico, demonstrated the upgraded single stage model. This next-generation target, built by Orbital ATK’s Technical Services Division in Wallops Island, Virginia, and the Launch Vehicle Division in Chandler, Arizona, incorporates a new configuration representing a different class of threats which can be used to demonstrate defensive protection capability.

“We’re delighted with the flight test and look forward to working closely with the Army to further realize the vision of the Zombie Pathfinder program,” said John Pullen, VP and General Manager of Orbital ATK’s Technical Services Division. “Orbital ATK has been at the forefront of providing low cost targets and we anticipate this market as a growth area. This successful demonstration reinforces our ability to provide affordable and reliable ongoing operational support in the future.”

Zombie Pathfinder is developed and administered by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (USASMDC/ARSTRAT), in conjunction with NASA. NASA’s Suborbital Research Rocket Program, operated by Orbital ATK since 2010, collaborates with the Department of Defense and civilian agencies for developmental non-weapon systems in addition to conducting scientific and technology research missions.

Five Zombie target missions have been contracted to test various interceptor methods, with additional orders anticipated. A two-stage configuration of the target that is capable of longer ground ranges is scheduled for demonstration in spring 2018.
