Design and Analysis

Orbital ATK has a skilled staff of engineers with years of experience in the design and analysis of advanced propulsion systems, test articles and facility systems, including thermal and structural analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion analysis, and systems analysis.

Orbital ATK's design engineers utilize several available Computer-Aided Design (CAD) packages (including Unigraphics, AutoCAD, Pro/Engineer and Rhino) to develop an array of products and systems to meet our customers' demands. Rigorous design reviews and an eye toward production and manufacturing integration ensure quality solutions.

Thermal/structural analysis
Orbital ATK's seasoned structural analysis team routinely performs in-depth, finite, element-based, thermal, structural and modal analyses of complex engine and vehicle structures that operate in high temperature, highly transient thermal environments.

Orbital ATK's analyses are conducted in order to determine strength, creep, Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF), High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) and frequency margins using various validated Finite Element Analysis (FEA) codes. Analyses consider all aspects of loading, from cold assembly through hot shut-down and off-design conditions such as trajectory dispersion and mission envelope excursions. Manufacturing tolerances, part fits, fastener assembly torque range, material strength deviation, and their interactions are some of the factors typically considered in a structural evaluation.

CFD and combustion analysis
Using two high-power Beowulf Clusters and a combination of commercial and in-house codes, Orbital ATK General Applied Science Laboratory (GASL) is able to provide analysis for inlet design, nozzle design, chemically reacting flows, external aerodynamics, unsteady gas dynamics, and propulsion performance for a wide variety of engines.

Systems analysis
In support of payload design and integration, Orbital ATK has developed expertise in fluid-systems design and analysis, including system modeling in Simulink, Generalized Fluid System Simulation Program (GFSSP), Flowmaster and in-house codes. The company also has experience in electro-mechanical design and flight-qualified instrumentation and computer systems.
